Bengals’ Joe Burrow eyes Thanksgiving comeback: Could he save Cincinnati’s season?

The Cincinnati Bengals are edging closer to a significant boost, as promising news has emerged regarding the recovery of star quarterback Joe Burrow.

Burrow, who suffered a major turf-toe injury in Week 2, has been sidelined for weeks, but recent developments indicate he may be nearing a return to the field.

The injury, diagnosed as a Grade 3 turf-toe, required surgical intervention and initially carried a recovery timeline of approximately three months.

The Bengals officially opened Burrow‘s 21-day practice window earlier this month, allowing him to begin limited on-field work while still on injured reserve. This window gives the team the flexibility to evaluate his readiness without rushing him back into full competition.

On his first day back, Burrow participated in controlled drills with receivers, focusing on passing mechanics and mobility. He did not immediately join full 11-on-11 team sessions, reflecting a cautious approach by both the player and the coaching staff.

Head coach Zac Taylor confirmed that while Burrow is progressing, he would not be available for the team’s next game. This measured strategy underscored the team’s priority on Burrow’s long-term health over short-term gains.

A return on the horizon

Insiders were initially optimistic about a potential mid-December return, assuming Burrow continues to progress without setbacks.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport suggested that, barring complications, Burrow could be ready to play by then. Now there are new reports, including insights from respected insiders like Jay Glazer, indicate that Burrow himself anticipates a return around Thanksgiving.

Recently, Burrow has escalated his participation in practice. He has taken part in full drills, including stretching, jogging, and 11-on-11 sessions for the first time since his surgery.

While he may not suit up for the immediate next game, a potential appearance against the Baltimore Ravens on Thanksgiving night seems realistic if his progress continues.

Burrow has emphasized that his return depends on how his toe responds to increasing activity, stating, “There’s a lot of variables … the number one is how [the toe] is feeling.” The Bengals appear fully aligned with this cautious philosophy, prioritizing the quarterback’s long-term fitness over rushing him back prematurely.

Cincinnati has struggled in Burrow‘s absence. The offense has lacked rhythm, and the defense has underperformed, highlighting just how critical his return could be for the team’s playoff hopes.

Beyond statistics, Burrow‘s presence provides leadership and confidence that can energize both the locker room and the fan base.

If all continues to progress as expected during this 21-day practice window, Joe Burrow could realistically be back under center before the end of the month.

A healthy Burrow would not only revitalize the Bengals‘ offense but also give the team a crucial shot at finishing the season strong and securing a playoff position. His comeback could very well mark a turning point for Cincinnati’s season.
