Bengals’ Joe Burrow explains why he played against Ravens despite injury setback

Even with the Cincinnati Bengals all but eliminated from playoff contention, quarterback Joe Burrow chose to step back onto the field rather than sit out the remainder of the season.

Burrow returned Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens for the first time since a Week 2 toe injury, demonstrating both his competitive spirit and dedication to the fans.

Burrow explained why playing on Thanksgiving was important to him. “But whenever you have an opportunity like this against a divisional opponent that’s won five straight, and you’re playing on a Thursday night in front of the world.

That’s an exciting opportunity,” he told reporters. His words underscored the significance of the moment, not just for the team, but for the spectacle of football on one of the biggest days of the year.

Reliving Childhood Memories

Burrow also reflected on the childhood memories that influenced his decision to play.

“Just like a lot of kids, you grow up going through Thanksgiving, you have your meals with your family and then you go and sit on the couch, and typically, there’s not a lot on except football,” he said. “Back in the day, it was Lions and somebody.

You go watch Matthew Stafford throw for 300, 400-something yards with Calvin Johnson and probably lose the game, but it was fun to watch. Those are memories that you have, so I always wanted to kind to be the person out there.”

The quarterback’s performance validated his decision. Burrow threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Bengals to a Thanksgiving win over the Ravens.

When asked again about why he chose to play despite the team’s playoff situation, he kept the focus on enjoyment and the fans.

“We’re getting paid a lot of money to play a kid’s game. I love playing. I just want to put on a show for the fans,” Burrow said.

Burrow‘s choice highlights a commitment to both his craft and the fans who have supported him throughout his career.

While many players might rest during a season without playoff implications, Burrow‘s decision reflects a dedication to the game itself and the traditions that make football such a central part of the holiday season.

Even as the Bengals face a challenging season, Burrow‘s return and performance serve as a reminder of his leadership and competitive drive.

By stepping onto the field on Thanksgiving, he not only delivered a memorable game but also connected with fans who share the same holiday memories that inspired him to play.
