David Benavidez is still disappointed that he was never able to convince Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to give him a shot at his 168-pound title. While the ‘Mexican Monster’ has already accepted that his long-awaited fight will not happen and is even preparing for his next fight at 175 pounds against David Morrell in February, he actually seems to be still hurt by the disdain of the Mexican champion
This was after the Mexican-American participated in the Cigar Talk podcast and claimed that Canelo rejected a $70 million offer because he is afraid to face him
“This fight will not take place because he does not want to fight me,” explained ‘Red Flag’ and insisted that the fighter from Guadalajara, Mexico does not want to risk his legacy against an opponent who has real conditions to beat him
He (Canelo) doesn’t want to fight me because he’s scared of me. Look, Canelo is in the place where he is because he has fought with the best and now he is making the biggest purses
Canelo only thinks about the money
Another element in Benavidez’s argument is the refusal to face Terence Crawford, in what would have been the first fight in history in which two undisputed champions faced each other. However, Canelo demanded a nine-figure purse for any promoter interested, which practically made it unfeasible
Now all he wants to do is make money, he doesn’t care about the challenges, but the reason I say he’s scared is because he was offered $70 million to fight me, that’s before the PPV. Imagine how much he would make with the PPV
As consolation, Benavidez has David Morrell Jr. ahead of him on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with the intention of getting a shot at the undisputed 175-pound title just won by Russian veteran Artur Beterbiev.
