Ben Simmons shocks the NBA: Is he retiring at 29 after his fall in the league?

Ben Simmons’ name is back in the spotlight, and not because of his plays on the court. According to recent reports, the Australian is seriously considering retiring from the NBA-an unexpected decision that would mark an abrupt end to his career after just a few years in the league. Simmons, who shined with the Philadelphia 76ers in his early seasons, has seen injuries, criticism, and confidence issues completely derail his trajectory.

Simmons arrived with the label of a future superstar, compared to figures like LeBron James and Magic Johnson thanks to his court vision and ability to facilitate offense. However, everything changed in the 2021 playoffs, when the 76ers fell to the Atlanta Hawks and the point guard was criticized for avoiding key shots, sparking harsh criticism from fans and analysts.

From that moment on, his career entered a downward spiral. Between back problems and nerve injuries, Simmons played only 57 of the 164 possible games over two seasons, including just 15 in the 2023-24 campaign. Although he made 51 appearances in 2024-25 between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, he never regained the level that once made him a star.

Knicks interested, but Simmons unsure about his future

The New York Post revealed that the Knicks have shown interest in adding Simmons to strengthen their bench, highlighting his defensive potential and athletic ability. However, the player himself is reportedly unsure whether he wants to continue in the league.

A source cited by the outlet stated: “Ben Simmons has generated interest from the Knicks and another team, but he’s also wondering if he wants to keep playing in the NBA next season.”

This uncertainty grows even more considering Simmons has already earned over 200 million dollars in his career and has a net worth close to 80 million, allowing him to retire without financial concerns.

End of Simmons’ career?

At 29 years old, the big question is whether Simmons will choose to hang up his sneakers for good or attempt one last push in his career, possibly with the Knicks. What’s clear is that his case reflects how a bright promise can quickly fade in the NBA when injuries and mental pressure outweigh talent.

The outcome of this story could mark one of the most surprising retirements in professional basketball in recent years.
