Ben Johnson will try to turn Caleb Williams into a Patrick Mahomes and thus raise the level of the Chicago Bears

In the Super Bowl era, the Chicago Bears have been the worst team at the quarterback position. They’ve made countless mistakes in that unit-the most memorable being in 2017, when they selected Mitchell Trubisky even though Patrick Mahomes was still available. Mahomes was later picked by the Kansas City Chiefs, and the rest is history.

Now, the Bears have a gem in their hands with Caleb Williams. During his time at USC, he shined and entered the NFL as a top prospect. However, in his rookie season, he had ups and downs and didn’t make the immediate impact many hoped for. But in his second year, they will try to change that story.

The team from the Windy City hired Ben Johnson as their new Head Coach. He was the offensive mastermind behind the Detroit Lions, who have done wonders in recent years. In 2024, the Lions scored 564 points-the fourth-highest total in NFL history.

Ben Johnson’s offensive scheme is the big hope for Caleb Williams

NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell highlighted some key issues with Caleb Williams during his first year as the Bears’ quarterback. However, with the new coaching staff led by Ben Johnson, those issues could be fixed relatively easily.

One of the main areas for improvement is passing accuracy, which can be corrected by staying inside the pocket and working on proper mechanics.

“There were moments when he simply didn’t have a good sense of pressure,” said Cosell. “Many teams study this. They look at quarterbacks who were sacked often in college, and they tend to be the same ones who take a lot of sacks in the NFL. That’s something that usually doesn’t change.”

Another critical point is protecting Caleb Williams, who was sacked 68 times-a franchise record. To address this, the Bears signed successful offensive guard Joe Thuney, a champion with both the Chiefs and Patriots.

“Quarterbacks who tend to drop back too far-and he has that tendency-can’t do that in the NFL,” Cosell added. “Maybe Lamar Jackson can, but he’s a phenomenon.”

So, 2025 will be a crucial year for Caleb Williams. Last season, he threw for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdown passes, and 6 interceptions. But now, with Ben Johnson as his new Head Coach, he is expected to take the next step and help change the narrative of the Chicago Bears at the quarterback position.
