Bears finally break 11-year QB trend and it doesn’t involve Caleb Williams

In a significant move that marks a departure from their historical approach, the Chicago Bears have signed backup quarterback Tyson Bagent to a two-year contract extension worth $10 million, with potential incentives bringing the total to $16 million.

This decision not only secures Bagent’s role through the 2027 season but also breaks an 11-year trend without a quarterback contract extension, the last being Jay Cutler in 2014.

Bagent’s journey to key contributor

Tyson Bagent’s path to the NFL is a testament to perseverance and determination. After going undrafted in 2023, he joined the Bears as a free agent from Shepherd University. Despite limited opportunities in his first two seasons, Bagent’s work ethic and leadership qualities have earned him the trust of head coach Ben Johnson.

His performance in preseason games, including a notable outing against the Buffalo Bills, showcased his readiness to step in when needed, solidifying his position as a reliable backup to starter Caleb Williams.

Stability in Chicago

The Bears’ decision to extend Bagent’s contract represents a shift in the franchise’s approach to quarterback stability. Historically, the team has faced challenges at the quarterback position, with several high-profile draft picks and trades failing to yield long-term success.

By commiting to Bagent, the Bears are not only investing in a capable backup but also sending a message about their commitment to building a strong and consistent quarterback foundation for the future.
