Barcelona’s streak ends as Real Madrid close the gap

Real Sociedad ended Barcelona’s historic winning streak. The Catalans arrived at Anoeta in great form, the best of the whole season and of their recent history, but Matarazzo’s side put an end to their excellent run. The Catalans suffered their fifth defeat of the campaign in San Sebastian, their third in the regular domestic tournament. The setback allows Real Madrid to close the gap, as they are now just one point behind BarcaBarcelona arrived in San Sebastian on a run of nine consecutive LaLiga victories and 11 in total. Their last defeat in the domestic tournament was on October 26, against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. In general, they had not stumbled since the match against Chelsea in the Champions League, on November 25.

The Catalans, who hit the post five times last night, also lost at Anoeta last season: the score was 1-0, with a goal from Becker. The victory for Real Sociedad also meant that Joan Garcia‘s good run in the Blaugrana goal was brought to an abrupt halt. The goalkeeper from Sallent had gone three games in LaLiga without conceding a goal.

The defeat against Materazzo’s side also allows Real Madrid to close the gap on Barcelona and move to within a point of Hansi Flick’s side.

De Jong’s anger

The midfielder was very harsh with the referee Gil Manzano. “You can’t even talk to the referee. And I’m the captain. He looks at me with a face that I’m better than you… I tell him to watch the time, and he doesn’t. And I told him, and he gives me a card,” he said.

The Dutch international lamented, however, the lack of accuracy in front of goal: “I think we deserved to win, we had a lot of chances. But you have to put them in. We missed too many. We played well, but we didn’t score. The Real goalkeeper had a great game”.
