“Barbie” Angel Reese can’t wait to take the court at a historic fan festival alongside Serena Williams

For Angel Reese, the nickname that began as a fan-led tribute during her collegiate days at LSU has officially transformed into a historic professional milestone.

This Friday, the Chicago Sky forward will serve as a keynote speaker at the inaugural Barbie Dream Fest in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The three-day event at the Broward County Convention Center is the first sanctioned fan festival in the brand’s 67-year history, and Reese is positioning her participation as a victory for authentic self-expression.

Reese expressed immense pride in the invitation, specifically noting the high-caliber company she will keep during the weekend’s festivities.

The 23-year-old All-Star is scheduled to share the stage with Serena Williams, who will be honored with the first-ever Barbie Dream Fest Icon Award.

The lineup also includes Dr. Swati Mohan and Marlee Matlin, creating a panel of speakers that spans the worlds of elite athletics, space exploration, and Hollywood.

“It’s incredible – it’s bigger than just an event, it’s history,” Reese stated in a recent conversation with The Palm Beach Post.

“Being part of the first Barbie fan festival is already special, but then you look at who I’m sharing this time with – Serena Williams, who redefined greatness, and Dr. Swati Mohan, who’s literally changing the world through science.”

A full-circle victory for the “Chi-Barbie” brand

The journey to this official partnership has been a long one for Reese. During her time at LSU, her attempt to trademark the “Bayou Barbie” moniker faced legal hurdles with Mattel’s intellectual property.

However, after transitioning to the WNBA and adopting the “Chi-Barbie” title, the brand has fully embraced her.

Reese views this weekend as the ultimate validation of her personal journey, moving from a fan-inspired nickname to an official collaboration with the toy giant.

“It really does feel full circle, ‘Bayou Barbie’ started with the fans, and it was just something fun, something that represented my time at LSU, but now it’s grown into something way bigger,” Reese added.

“To have Barbie embrace that and bring me into this moment, that’s special. It shows how powerful it is to be authentically yourself.”
