The NFL issued a fine to Baker Mayfield this week over what the league determined was a prohibited on-field gesture, and the reaction reached beyond Raymond James Stadium. Mayfield’s wife shared her thoughts by posting a brief and sarcastic message on Instagram, reacting to the league labeling the gesture as ”violent.”
Her caption simply read:
So Violent.
The fine stemmed from a week 13 touchdown celebration during Tampa Bay’s win. Mayfield and running back Bucky Irving performed a planned handshake that included a nose wipe motion. The league later classified that movement as a banned feature and fined Mayfield $14,491. There was no flag thrown during the game itself – the discipline was handed out retroactively.
League cities’ earlier ruling on the gesture
The NFL had addressed this specific celebration months ago, when vice president Troy Vincent spoke on policy changes involving certain signals.
The nose wipe has gang connotations; it’s disrespectful, Vincent said at the time. He added that the league reviewed how the gesture appears online and how it could be interpreted publicly, especially among younger fans.
Tampa Bay players did not respond in frustration on the field during Week 13, and the team had previously referred to the handshake as something light-hearted and creative. However, the league’s ruling remained firm.
Irving later described how his mindset has changed this year, saying he hit a tough point earlier in the season, leaned on faith, and has been trying to stay present heading into each week. He did not directly address the fine but acknowledged how much the past two months have shaped him personally.
Buccaneers now turn attention to bigger problems after loss
While the fine drew headlines, Tampa Bay’s concern expanded after a disappointing loss in week 14. The Buccaneers fell 24-20 against New Orleans – a game they expected to win.
Felt like we just gave it away or didn’t make the plays to win it.
Mayfield said, adding that weather was not an excuse. He emphasized that the team made mistakes in situations they have executed successfully before.
The Buccaneers were already dealing with noticeable absences. Offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs remained unavailable
Despite roster challenges, Tampa Bay enters week 15 positioned for a playoff run, sitting at 71% probability based on current projections. Their matchup against the Atlanta Falcons comes with urgency – not because of a celebration or a fine, but because the NFC margin has tightened.
Punishment aside, Tampa Bay’s priority now shifts toward correcting mistakes, regaining rhythm, and finding closing-time execution as December football continues.
