Baker Mayfield’s must-win strategy: Why he should avoid being a ‘hero’ vs. Panthers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield heads into Week 18 with the weight of his team’s season on his shoulders.

After an up and down 2025 campaign, Mayfield and the Buccaneers must beat the Carolina Panthers to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Tampa Bay’s record sits at 7-9, and a win would reopen the door to the NFC South title and a postseason berth, depending on how other results go. The Panthers, at 8-8, hold the advantage for the division but are not guaranteed a playoff spot either. It’s a game that could define both teams’ seasons.

Last week’s narrow loss to the Miami Dolphins saw Mayfield deliver a strong statistical performance, but the team still came up short. Analysts have pointed to inconsistencies throughout the year, especially when Mayfield has to shoulder too much of the offensive load.

That pattern was a focal point for NFL insider Mina Kimes, who believes the Buccaneers must adjust their offensive approach to have a chance in this decisive matchup.

“I think what was kind of underestimated last year was he was in such a great quarterbacking environment,” Kimes explained, reflecting on how Mayfield‘s situation has changed.

“The screens were so good, the run game was so efficient.”

She has argued that expecting Mayfield to carry the offense solo has been a key factor in recent struggles.

“He wasn’t asked to carry this offense, and we’ve seen this year that asking him to carry the offense is actually not a great idea.”

How the Buccaneers can attack Carolina’s defense

Carolina’s defense presents a different challenge that suits a more controlled passing attack. According to defensive splits, the Panthers excel at limiting damage on deep passes but are more vulnerable closer to the line of scrimmage. This means shorter, quicker throws could be more effective for Tampa Bay’s game plan.

“Don’t throw it deep on Carolina,” Kimes advised.

She highlighted how the Panthers’ defensive backs are among the league’s most effective at breaking up longer plays, whereas their performance against the short passing game has been less imposing.

“The Carolina defense has a fascinating split,” she noted.

“Baker doesn’t need to be a hero; he just needs to be a distributor.”

This strategic perspective aligns with recent statistical breakdowns of Mayfield‘s performance versus the Panthers and across the season. Carolina’s defense has allowed moderate passing yardage but has kept opposing quarterbacks from explosive, deep plays this year.

A win over Carolina not only keeps the Buccaneers alive in the division race but could also force tiebreaker scenarios that work in their favor. If Tampa Bay defeats the Panthers and the Falcons lose to the Saints, the Bucs would clinch the NFC South title with a 9-9 record. Otherwise, a loss would eliminate them from contention entirely.

A disciplined approach that avoids risky throws and emphasizes quick completions could be the difference between extending the season and watching it end on Saturday.
