Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield spoke about the performance of fellow offensive player Emeka Egbuka, a wide receiver who Mayfield himself compared to an NFL All-Pro. Todd Bowles’ team defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-14 last Saturday, so they will be confident in their next game.
Egbuka, a first-round draft pick by the Buccaneers, has received numerous praise during the preseason training camp for his mastery of the offensive system. On Saturday night against the Steelers in the second week of preseason training camp, Egbuka brought the visiting Bucs to their feet with a touchdown.
Emeka Egbuka draws comparisons to Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown
After the touchdown against Pittsburgh, Baker Mayfield compared Egbuka to Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. “Receivers don’t always stay on the ground, they run after the catch to gain yards, and (Egbuka) reminds me of Amon-Ra St. Brown in some ways, which is a high compliment,” Mayfield said.
After making 90 receptions for 912 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie in 2021, St. Brown has been one of the NFL’s elite wide receivers as a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFL All-Pro over the past three seasons. In 2024, the Lions receiver signed a $120 million contract extension.
Garret Greene close to making the Buccaneers’ roster
Wide receiver Garrett Greene continues to prove he’s worth keeping. He once again did everything the Bucs asked of him, catching all three passes they threw his way for 25 yards. In two preseason games, he has five receptions on five targets for 47 yards and two punt returns for a total of 38 yards.
Greene’s last chance to impress the Buccaneers’ coaching staff and front office will be next Saturday, August 23, against the Buffalo Bills. Considering most teams typically bench their starters and key players for the final preseason game, Greene is likely to play most of the game.
