Bad news for the Cowboys ahead of their game against the Commanders. They’re losing a key player

Cornerback Trevon Diggs will not be available to play against the Washington Commanders this Sunday night.

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Trevon Diggs had an accident at his home last night. He has a concussion. He won’t play Sunday.

Reported Jon Machota of The Athletic.

Uncertainty surrounds Trevon Diggs’ condition

It remains unclear exactly what happened to the Cowboys’ cornerback, but it appears he will have to enter the league’s concussion protocol before being cleared to return to play. This is yet another setback for the Cowboys, who continue to struggle with defensive consistency.

On the offensive side, things have been running more smoothly with Dak Prescott under center, although the backfield has yet to reach the level of efficiency the team would like to see.

That’s my standard. That’s our standard. That’s what we expect to do. I don’t think it’s any added pressure.

I feel like I need to score every time. I feel like I need to complete every pass.

Prescott told Machota.

So far, the Cowboys are having a solid season, but they remain one of the league’s biggest question marks heading into the coming weeks.

They can score plenty of points, but they also give up far too many, creating an imbalance that has kept them from reaching their full potential. For head coach, Brian Schottenheimer, tightening up the defense, particularly the front line, has become an urgent priority.

The absence of linebacker Micah Parsons, who left for the Green Bay Packers shortly before the start of the 2025 season, continues to weigh heavily on the team. His departure has left a noticeable void in the defense, one that Dallas has yet to fill effectively.

Diggs’ injury only adds to the challenges the Cowboys are facing as they try to stabilize their defense and maintain momentum in the NFC. His presence in the secondary has long been a crucial part of their scheme, providing both coverage skill and playmaking ability. Without him, the unit’s vulnerability against deep passes could become even more apparent.

As the Cowboys prepare to take on Washington, Schottenheimer and his staff will have to rely on their depth at cornerback, likely turning to younger players to step up in Diggs’ absence. The defensive coordinator has emphasized that accountability and discipline must improve if Dallas hopes to remain competitive down the stretch.

Despite the uncertainty, there’s still confidence in the locker room that the team can overcome this latest hurdle. Yet with a defense under scrutiny and key pieces missing, the Cowboys’ Sunday night matchup will serve as another major test for a team still searching for balance.
