Austin Reaves is playing some of the best basketball of his career, and that success is quietly pushing the Los Angeles Lakers toward a decision they cannot delay forever. With free agency looming in the distance, Reaves‘ future in Los Angeles is no longer a given.
Since arriving in 2021, Reaves has steadily climbed from an undrafted role player into one of the Lakers‘ most dependable pieces.
Alongside LeBron James and Luka Doncic, he has become a trusted option who scores efficiently, makes the right reads, and holds his own in late-game situations. Around the league, his blend of shooting, composure, and playmaking has not gone unnoticed.
That growth has financial consequences. Reaves is in the third year of a four-year, $56 million contract, with the final season structured as a player option.
If he believes his market value exceeds that figure, he can opt out and enter free agency as soon as the 2026 offseason, positioning himself among the most attractive guards available.
NBA insider Brett Siegel addressed Reaves‘ situation during a December 30 episode of the Clutch Scoops show, explaining why rival executives continue to circle his name in conversations.
“Reaves is just a very interesting scenario that keeps getting brought up when we talk to rival teams around the league,” Siegel said.
“It’s hard to imagine the Lakers will trade him, but he will most likely opt-out and enter free agency as one of the better guys on the market. Teams are going to pursue him. They’re going to be coming at him with max offers. So will the Lakers give him the full max? Does he want to be the number two, to Luka Doncic in LA long term? Or will he pull a Jalen Brunson to leave to be a star elsewhere?”
Why Reaves’ contract puts pressure on the front office
Siegel added that while there is no indication the Lakers are actively trying to move Reaves, the possibility of losing him without compensation is something the organization must take seriously.
“So will the Lakers trade Reaves? I really don’t think they will and we haven’t heard anything developing on that front about them moving behind the scenes and see what they can get for Reaves, but if they are hesitant about offering him a max deal, and they are concerned that he could look at other offers in the off season, I think you have to do you due diligence to see what the can potentially give you,” he noted.
It is a familiar dilemma in today’s NBA. Reaves has clearly outplayed his contract, and players with his skill set rarely linger on the market. Teams looking for a guard who can thrive without monopolizing the ball are expected to line up quickly if he becomes available.
