The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are already shaping up to be historic, and not just for the usual track, field, and gymnastics feats. For the first time in history, flag football will be an official Olympic sport. And among the NFL stars who might step onto this new global stage is Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens, also known as the husband of legendary gymnast Simone Biles.
Owens recently appeared in a Chicago Bears social media reel where he playfully hinted at his Olympic ambitions. When asked who on the team should be picked for the Olympic flag football squad, he pointed to his water bottle, labeled “JO“, and declared, “I am bringing another gold medal to the family.” That’s right: Simone Biles might not be the only Olympic champion in the household for long.
A new era for American football
This addition marks a massive step forward for American football. Although the sport was included as a demonstration in the 1932 Games, also in Los Angeles, it’s never been part of the official medal competition. That changes in 2028, with NFL owners voting in favor of participating in the Olympic flag football event.
Unlike traditional tackle football, flag football is a fast-paced, non-contact version of the sport. According to Olympic guidelines, only one player from each NFL team will be eligible to participate. That makes Owens‘ early declaration even more intriguing, competition will be tight.
Simone Biles’ Olympic future remains uncertain
While Jonathan Owens seems ready to chase Olympic gold, the same can’t yet be said for Simone Biles. The most decorated gymnast in history has not confirmed whether she will compete in LA. Speaking to French media outlet L’Équipe, Biles admitted, “I will be there, whether on the apparatus or in the stands. I still haven’t decided.”
In a more recent interview with Olympics.com, she emphasized her current focus on healing, physically and mentally, after years of elite competition. “If I’m gonna compete again, I’m not so sure,” she said, “But I will be at the Olympics.”
So, whether it’s Simone on the beam or Owens on the field, one thing’s certain: the Biles-Owens household is aiming to make history in Los Angeles.
