Aryna Sabalenka gives frosty response to reporter despite matching Serena Williams at US Open

Aryna Sabalenka, the current world No. 1, recently made waves at the US Open, drawing attention not only for her remarkable tennis but also for her candid response to a reporter’s question.

On Sunday, Sabalenka beat Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-4 to ensure that she equaled a remarkable achievement previously held by the legendary Serena Williams, and the moment sparked an exchange that had fans and analysts talking.

With her win, Sabalenka became only the fourth woman since 2000 to reach the quarter-finals of four Grand Slam events in a single season as the top-ranked WTA player. Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, and Williams were the only others to do it before her.

However, while the achievement in itself was impressive, it was Sabalenka’s response to a reporter’s question after the match that really turned heads.

A tetchy response that shows her focus

Following her victory, Sabalenka was asked by a reporter about the significance of matching Williams’ achievement at the US Open.

Instead of celebrating the comparison or offering an elaborate response, Sabalenka’s tone was sharp and direct. “I don’t care,” making it clear that her focus is entirely on her own game, not comparisons with tennis legends.

“I’m playing to win, and I don’t care about what happened last year,” she said. “I just know it’s a big achievement, and I’m super happy to achieve it once, but the goal is to do it many more times. So my mentality is going out there every time, bringing the best experience, and fighting for my dream.”

This straightforward reaction might have caught some off guard, as many athletes would typically seize the moment to acknowledge the legacy of greats like Serena. Yet, Sabalenka’s response underlined her determination to carve out her own identity in the tennis world, free from the weight of others’ legacies.

The pressure of comparisons

While Sabalenka’s blunt response might seem cold, it sheds light on the intense pressure that top athletes often face. Being frequently compared to the likes of Serena Williams, one of the greatest athletes in history, could be overwhelming for any player.

The Belarusian star has already made a significant impact on the WTA circuit. With her powerhouse serving and aggressive style of play, she has risen to prominence, and her performances on the big stage-particularly in the Grand Slams-have demonstrated that she is capable of achieving greatness in her own right.

Despite this, the constant media scrutiny and the shadow of tennis greats like Williams remain a part of the conversation, something Sabalenka seems to wish to distance herself from.

As Sabalenka continues her US Open campaign, her future looks bright. After taking the world by storm with her performances in recent months, the 27-year-old has firmly established herself as one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour.

After winning the US Open last year, she will have similar ambitions to add to her collection of three Grand Slams. Up next is Marketa Vondrousova, knowing that she is facing a determined Sabalenka on the other side of the court.
