World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka cemented her dominance on the WTA Tour by completing the prestigious Sunshine Double on Saturday, defeating American star Coco Gauff 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the Miami Open final at Miami Gardens, Florida.
With the victory, Sabalenka became the first player since Iga Swiatek in 2022 to achieve the rare feat of winning both Indian Wells and Miami consecutively.
“I haven’t had a moment to stop, look back and realize what’s happened in the past months,” Sabalenka said during the trophy ceremony.
I’m so proud of the work we’ve done and the fight I was able to bring on court. Coco played incredibly, but I stayed mentally strong and trusted my game.
In Saturday’s final, Sabalenka came out firing, breaking Gauff’s opening serve and dictating play with aggressive shot-making.
Gauff battles hard but falls short in Miami final
Sabalenka sealed the first set 6-2 with two aces and relentless pressure. Gauff responded in the second, earning the lone break to level the match.
But Sabalenka quickly reasserted control in the decider, breaking Gauff early and racing to a 3-1 lead. With the match on the line, she needed just one match point to close out the victory.
Statistically, Sabalenka forced 11 break points, converting four, while winning 74 percent of her first-serve points. Gauff, meanwhile, struggled with consistency, conceding seven double faults and being broken four times.
Despite the loss, Gauff praised her rival:
Aryna, congratulations. We’ve had many battles, many finals, and you push me to be a better player. You’re a great fighter, and I’m sure we’ll play many more.
Sabalenka joins elite company with back-to-back titles
Sabalenka now joins an exclusive list of just 11 players – and only five women – to complete the Sunshine Double. She follows in the footsteps of legends Steffi Graf (1994, 1996), Kim Clijsters (2005), Victoria Azarenka (2016), and Swiatek (2022).
This triumph also marks Sabalenka’s second consecutive Miami Open title, making her the first player since Ashleigh Barty (2019, 2021) to defend the crown. She dropped only one set throughout the tournament, showcasing her consistency and resilience.
Sabalenka’s Sunshine Double not only underscores her dominance but also places her firmly among the sport’s greats. With her confidence soaring and history on her side, the world No. 1 looks poised to continue her remarkable run deep into the season.
