The boxing world is once again in mourning this week, as Arturo Gatti Jr. has died at the young age of 17. It was a stunning development that sent shockwaves throughout the industry. A 17-year-old passing away is horrible in and of itself, but Gatti Jr.’s death hits home especially hard due to the circumstances surrounding his father’s death.
Arturo Gatti, a two-weight class world champion during the 1990s and 2000s, took his own life at 37 years old in July of 2009. He was found dead in a hotel in Brazil, while he was on vacation with his wife and son, Gatti Jr. Despite theories that Gatti was actually murdered, it continues to be deemed a suicide by hanging by authorities to this day.

Gatti Jr. died in the exact same way. As confirmed by Chuck Zito, Gatti’s former bodyguard, Gatti Jr. was found hanging in an apartment in Mexico on Tuesday. It’s not clear yet if foul play is suspected, but it’s a terrible tragedy nonetheless.
Gatti Jr. was training to be a professional boxer, just like his father, having taken part in several amateur bouts. According to Daily Mail, Gatti Jr.’s coach, Moe Latif, was expected to head to Mexico this week to meet with the young boxer.
Latif confirmed the death on his Instagram stories, after posting a memory of Gatti Jr. late Tuesday night: “It is unfortunately not a rumor or a joke. Arturo is gone. I’d appreciate if you stop reaching out at this time.“
