Are the Pistons eyeing Anthony Davis? Here’s what we know

The Detroit Pistons have been one of the most surprising teams of the 2025-26 season, and their fast start has completely shifted the mood around the franchise. Sitting in first place in the Eastern Conference a quarter of the way into the campaign, Detroit has gone from long-term project to early contender.

Cade Cunningham has taken control of the offense with confidence, and the rest of the young roster has followed his pace. Naturally, success brings curiosity about how far this group can go and whether the front office might consider a major move to speed up the timeline.

As the Pistons keep piling up wins, fans have begun imagining what this roster might look like with an established star next to Cunningham. That idea intensified when NBA insider Brett Siegel addressed speculation tying the team to Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis. The rumor spread quickly across social media, creating a new round of questions about Detroit’s intentions.

According to Siegel, league sources have made it clear that the Pistons have had no conversations with Dallas regarding Davis. Even so, his name keeps coming up among fans and league personnel as a dream target, largely because of his defensive versatility and star profile. Siegel also reported that Detroit has not indicated any willingness to go all in for a superstar right now. The franchise still prefers to develop what it believes could be a long-term contender built around youth.

To this point, the Detroit Pistons have held no conversations with the Dallas Mavericks about a possible Anthony Davis trade… However, Davis continues to be linked to the Pistons by fans and league personnel as their ultimate star trade target before this year’s trade deadline for obvious reasons

Detroit’s rise fuels curiosity, not action

The chatter surrounding Davis originally surged after Dallas dismissed general manager Nico Harrison, which briefly opened the door for speculation about roster changes. ESPN and The Athletic have noted that the Mavericks are evaluating their direction, although nothing significant has happened on the trade front.

Detroit, meanwhile, already has an impressive frontcourt foundation. Jalen Duren is putting together a season worthy of All-Star consideration, and his growth has been one of the team’s biggest advantages. Isaiah Stewart provides toughness and flexibility, giving the Pistons little reason to rush into an aggressive trade.

As of right now, the Pistons have yet to signal that they are willing to go all-in on pursuing a superstar, like Davis, who could hit the trade market. All indications are that Detroit will keep its youth and continue to develop what it believes can be a contending force for many years to come

That said, if Davis were to become available at a reasonable price, it would be difficult for any rising team to ignore the possibility. Window opportunities in the NBA tend to appear quickly, and Detroit’s early success has created at least enough intrigue for the rumors to keep circulating. Whether anything actually comes of it is a different story, but the Pistons have officially entered the spotlight.
