Are the Lakers looking to take advantage of the Knicks’ playoff struggles? They are cooking a move that could change the league

Mitchell Robinson’s future with the New York Knicks is uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract, and rumors of a potential trade to the Los Angeles Lakers are gaining traction. The Knicks, despite their disappointing Game 1 loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, are expected to retain their core lineup, with Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart locked into long-term deals. However, Robinson’s role within the team remains in question as he weighs his options for the future.

Robinson made a strong return from injury late in the season and proved his value as a reliable presence in the paint. However, with Towns firmly established as the Knicks’ primary center, Robinson may seek a larger role elsewhere, potentially as a starter. The Lakers, in search of a big man to pair with Luka Doncic, could offer Robinson a more prominent position, along with the allure of playing under the bright lights of Los Angeles.

Rather than risk losing Robinson in free agency in 2026, New York could explore trade options. Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley recently listed Robinson among potential targets for the Lakers, alongside centers like Walker Kessler, Nic Claxton, Daniel Gafford, and Robert Williams III. Los Angeles previously attempted to acquire Mark Williams from Charlotte, offering Dalton Knecht and a first-round pick, but the deal fell apart due to a failed medical evaluation. If the Knicks receive a similar package for Robinson, they may find it difficult to decline.

Looking for more role players

New York’s bench depth has been a concern all season, with Miles McBride being the only consistent contributor outside the starting five. Trading Robinson could allow the Knicks to strengthen their wing rotation behind Anunoby and Hart, both of whom played extensive minutes throughout the season. While Robinson has proven himself as a strong defensive asset, his departure could allow the Knicks to fill key gaps in their roster heading into the next season.

For the Lakers, acquiring Robinson would provide much-needed defensive stability alongside Doni. The team already made a major move by trading Anthony Davis earlier this year, and securing a rim protector like Robinson would help solidify their roster. His rebounding ability and shot-blocking presence could be key factors in Los Angeles’ effort to make a deep playoff run next season.

As the offseason approaches, Robinson’s future remains one of the most intriguing storylines for both the Knicks and the Lakers. If New York opts to trade him, the move could reshape their roster heading into the 2025-26 season while offering Robinson an opportunity to thrive in a bigger role elsewhere. The next few months will determine whether this speculation turns into a reality.
