In a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday night in Pristina, Turkey’s long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup sparked intense emotions – none more visible than those of star midfielder Arda Güler. Video footage circulating online captured the Real Madrid playmaker visibly distraught and unable to unable to handle his emotions in the final minutes of Turkey’s crucial playoff win over Kosovo.

His reaction reflected the high stakes and emotional weight of the match for a nation eager to end a 24-year absence from football’s biggest stage.

Turkey secured their place in the World Cup for the first time since finishing third in 2002, ending a cycle of five failed qualification attempts. The decisive moment came in the 53rd minute when Fenerbahçe striker Kerem Akturkoglu turned in a cutback from Orkun Kokcu, originally delivered by Kenan Yildiz, to give the visitors a narrow 1-0 lead.

Despite Kosovo’s persistent efforts in the second half, Turkey held firm to book their spot in Group C alongside Australia, Paraguay, and co-hosts the United States.

Kosovo, making their first major tournament playoff appearance since gaining FIFA and UEFA membership in 2016, came close to scoring earlier in the match. Turkey goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir made a stunning save to tip Fisnik Asllani’s powerful shot onto the crossbar, denying the hosts what would have been a historic equalizer.

Turkey, who had only one other shot on target outside of Akturkoglu‘s goal, relied on disciplined defending and composure under pressure to maintain their advantage.

Historic qualification after two decades

Turkey’s journey to this World Cup has been a long and emotional one. During qualifying, they won four of their first six matches but missed out on automatic qualification to Spain, finishing three points behind.

A tense playoff semi-final against Romania, secured with a key contribution from Brighton midfielder Ferdi Kadioglu, set the stage for Tuesday’s winner-takes-all clash.

Entering the game as heavy favorites, ranked 23rd in the world and 55 places above Kosovo, Turkey lived up to expectations, led by stars Güler and Hakan Calhanoglu of Inter Milan.

The victory not only ends years of frustration for Turkish fans but also builds on their recent tournament pedigree. Turkey reached the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024, losing narrowly to the Netherlands, showing that the team can compete on the global stage.

The emotional celebrations that followed in Pristina reflected the significance of this milestone for players, coaching staff, and supporters.

As the final whistle blew, Güler and his teammates were engulfed in jubilation, a moment captured on live video for millions to witness.

Turkey’s qualification sets the stage for an exciting summer in the 2026 World Cup, where they will face competitive opposition but arrive with confidence.
