Anthony Volpe is going through one of the most difficult moments since his arrival to the New York Yankees. The 24-year-old shortstop underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, an injury he had been carrying since May and forced him to make an important decision for his career.
The operation was performed by the medical team of Dr. Chris Ahmad and he is expected to have a long recovery until the beginning of the 2026 season, as long as he evolves in the best way and there are no other complications during this period. The Yankees have not issued any statement or information in this regard, but sources close to the player’s environment confirmed the procedure.
How did Anthony Volpe’s injury that led to surgery originate?
His injury began on May 3 in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, when Volpe threw the ball and immediately felt discomfort in his left shoulder and despite receiving two cortisone injections, the pain persisted, affecting his performance on the diamond. He even missed some games because of it, but returned and after the playoff elimination decided to undergo surgery.
Manager Aaron Boone had insisted months ago that surgery was not inevitable, but the wear and tear accumulated this season was what made Volpe and the medical team change their minds that the best option was to undergo the procedure. He will now be in rehabilitation and uncertainty is already beginning to set in as to whether he will be able to regain his level after the surgery and, above all, how long it will take him to return to his level.

Anthony Volpe’s numbers in the 2025 MLB season reflect that something was wrong with his physical condition because he had a promising start, hitting .233 with five home runs in 33 games and then his production dropped dramatically, finishing the year with a .205 batting average, 14 home runs and 53 RBIs.
Defensively, he left much to be desired, committing 19 errors, the highest figure of all the shortstops in the American League along with Trevor Story.
