Anthony Volpe can end the Yankees’ patience even if Aaron Boone keeps defending him

Anthony Volpe‘s credit within the New York Yankees appears to be running out. In 2025, he raised serious doubts about his level, and the arrival of Jose Caballero to the team only added pressure.

Inside the clubhouse, efforts were made to downplay Volpe’s mistakes-especially by manager Aaron Boone-but Caballero has performed strongly on both offense and defense from the moment he joined.

Is Anthony Volpe’s job in danger with the Yankees?

The big question is whether Volpe can maintain consistency. WFAN Sports Radio openly questions how long the Yankees will wait. Craig Carton analyzed the situation, noting that the team should give Volpe time-but Caballero’s presence is undeniably compelling.

“So here’s the deal. Now with Caballero in the mix, we have somebody that’s a good big league player,” Carton said. “He’s shown that with us and in Tampa and Seattle. He can defend at multiple positions, including shortstop. He started to push himself last year but I still think Anthony will be a frontline shortstop in this league.”

“Everyone’s path isn’t linear. We want it to be here, but in New York it can be tough when you’re finding your way. I think he’ll turn into that player, and I want it here. Bringing in guys like Caballero is good for competition,” he added.

Shoulder injury adds pressure

Volpe is currently recovering from a shoulder injury, which changes the outlook. When he returns, he’ll face real competition with Jose Caballero breathing down his neck. Fans and the organization may have limited patience left.

Time will reveal who is right, but the worst-case scenario for the Yankees is realizing that Anthony Volpe may never be the long-term solution at shortstop.
