It’s not a simple thing to become a legend for an MLB franchise. So many things have to go the correct way, and history must be made in some capacity in order for a player’s name to be synonymous with the ball club. Anthony Rizzo became that for the Chicago Cubs for many reasons.

Rizzo spent 10 seasons with the Cubs, making three All-Star teams and winning four gold gloves. But his biggest contribution was by far helping the franchise win the World Series in 2016. Rizzo caught the final out, and the ball hitting his glove followed by his celebration is ingrained in every Cubs fan’s mind. Despite a late career stint with the New York Yankees, Rizzo is a Cub through and through.

Anthony Rizzo was a pillar in the Chicago community during his time with the Cubs

So it was no surprise to see him post a Cubs jersey as the one he’s set to retire with. What really stood out was what was on that specific jersey. Surrounding Rizzo’s name and iconic No. 44 were signatures from patients who have battled cancer that Rizzo visited over the years.

It’s a cause that’s near and dear to Rizzo’s heart, primarily because he is a cancer survivor himself. At the age of 18, Rizzo was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It took less than a year for Rizzo, who suffered through chemotherapy, to be declared cancer-free and in remission.

Rizzo went on to have an epic professional baseball career, turning into a source of inspiration for many children. Although his time in MLB is up, there’s no doubt Rizzo will continue to be a pillar in his community for a long time.
