Boxer Anthony Joshua, who was involved in a serious car accident at the end of December that claimed the lives of two friends traveling with him, has reportedly decided to retire and hang up his gloves, according to his uncle in an interview with Nigerian media outlet ‘The Punch’.

“The most important thing is that he has retired from boxing. That makes us very happy, because every time he fights in the ring, we get very excited,” said Adedamola Joshua

The former world heavyweight champion in several organizations was injured in the accident and had to be hospitalized. After being discharged, he has pledged to provide lifelong support to the families of his two friends, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, who died in the accident.

Adedamola Joshua insisted that “every time he gets knocked down, it’s like our hearts are coming out of our chests. All those emotions every time he fights are too traumatic for us too. Now that he’s said he’s going while the ovation is at its highest, we’re happy.”

Joshua attended an emotional funeral at London’s Central Mosque on Sunday to say goodbye to his friends. Meanwhile, Nigerian police confirmed that Adeniyi Kayode, who was driving the vehicle in which Joshua was traveling, had been charged with several offences, including dangerous driving and driving without a valid licence, among others.
