Anthony Davis comments on Cooper Flagg after 2025 NBA Draft night

The Dallas Mavericks’ franchise-altering moment became official last night at the Barclays Center when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called Cooper Flagg‘s name as the first overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft.

Though the selection had been widely anticipated ever since the Mavs won the draft lottery, it marked the beginning of a new era in Dallas and the formation of an electrifying new Big Three: Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and now Cooper Flagg.

But even before Flagg suits up in a Mavericks uniform for the first time, he’s already facing a playful challenge from one of his new superstar teammates. Anthony Davis, a former No. 1 pick himself, took a moment to welcome Flagg with a heartfelt yet humorous video message.

“From one number 1 overall pick to another, congratulations man. Big accomplishment. Welcome to Dallas. Excited to have you. Enjoy tonight, you and the fam,” Davis said.

Davis, selected No. 1 by the New Orleans Pelicans in 2012, understands the weight that comes with being a top pick. But his message quickly turned from congratulatory to competitive, hinting at a bit of unfinished business with the 17-year-old phenom.

“I still remember that time you hit that three over me in Vegas last summer. So, I gotta get you back for that,” Davis added.

Flagg’s past duel with Davis resurfaces as Dallas eyes a fresh start

The moment Davis referenced happened last summer during Team USA’s Olympic training camp in Las Vegas. Flagg, then part of the United States Select Team, made headlines for holding his own and in some cases, outshining NBA stars. The viral clip of him burying a tough three-pointer right over Davis‘ outstretched arm became one of the most talked-about highlights from the camp.

At the time, Flagg admitted to being starstruck initially but said he found his rhythm quickly.

“It was cool, an unbelievable experience… I think once I got going into it, it was just playing basketball, and I think a lot of players share a similar experience that once you start playing, the nerves and stuff [disappear],” Flagg said.

Of course, Davis‘ “revenge” comment was more of a mentor’s playful nudge than anything else. He ended his message with reassurance and encouragement for Flagg as he prepares to enter the league under a bright spotlight.

“Most importantly man, congratulations. Welcome to the team. We’re gonna get to work. We will get some work in soon. But enjoy this night with your fam and stay safe, and we’ll see you in Dallas, champ,” Davis said.
