This was supposed to be the start of a succesful era for the Chicago Sky. With Angel Reese, potential face of the league who boosted the WNBA‘s popularity along with Caitlin Clark, and Kamilla Cardoso, a prospective All Star for years to come, the WNBA franchise was supposedly looking to be on the rise.
They just lost at home by 20 points against the Phoenix Mercury, in a game where at one point they were down by 36. A 3-9 record to start the season certainly isn’t what anyone expected. Add to that the move the front office decided to make this past offseason when they traded away their 2026 first round pick to add immediate contributors in Aja Sivka and Hailey Van Lith. Looking to be a ‘win now’ team and not worrying about the future, things aren’t looking as Reese and company wanted.
Angel Reese’s stat goes unchecked by Tyler Marsh
Just as the Chicago Sky was ready to regroup after a hurtful loss, being down by about 30 points during the second half of the game, their coach Tyler Marsh was asked for his opinion in regards to Angel Reese having zero shot attempts in the first half and ending with a mere 9 points total for the game. “Yeah, I think we got to continue to be aggresive offensively. You know what a defensive team Phoenix is. Defensively, we just got to guard.”
As if the reporter was in the wrong, as if the name of their main star wasn’t mentioned and as if Reese wasn’t having a notable unproductive game, Marsh decided the answer to the question was praising the other team. Is there something behind doors between player and coach?
Angel Reese’s carrousel situation
Maybe his coach didn’t want to expose her in front of the cameras, or maybe he was the one that didn’t want to be put on display. Various social media comments from fans have criticized the way Marsh has used his star player. “Sky fans don’t be shocked if the team completely go away from running the ball through Angel. Thats Tyler Marsh coaching for you and I know it’s coming,”, read one post.
“I am sorry, I need an investigation into Tyler Marsh and Jeff P. They are intentionally sabotaging Angel and icing her out on offense. At times, it even seems like the players are in on it as well! I am done, free Angel Reese!”, reads another post. Certainly, Reese has had her reputation affected with the ‘mebounds’ trademark she adopted, but, before the Mercury game, she had promising performances.
What’s really going on in the Chicago Sky is a mystery that only the people inside the locker room can really detail. Next game? Tomorrow at Atlanta (Dream).
