Angel Reese’s fans blamed for ruining her WNBA career amid catastrophic shooting stretch

The 2025 WNBA season has not gotten off to the start Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky wanted. Chicago is 2-5, with their latest loss being another one against the Indiana Fever, this time without Caitlin Clark on the court. It was another rough outing for Reese, who reached double digit rebounds once again, but only scored four points on 28.6% shooting. She now has a 30.9 field goal percentage through seven games this season, one of the worst in the entire league.

Since she stepped foot on a WNBA court, Reese has had to deal with critics saying she just rebounds her own misses from close range. While there’s a lot of merit in her tenacious rebounding, her inability to make shots consistently can’t be glossed over any more. This poor start to the season has essentially ended the Clark-Reese “debate” in the eyes of even the Sky player’s own fans.

Caitlin Clark was always ahead of Angel Reese

But in the eyes of some, none of this is Reese’s fault. Instead, it’s on her fans for creating a rivalry that never should have existed. They built her up to a level that perhaps was never attainable.

Reese has done nothing through the first stretch of the 2025 season to quell doubts about her offensive prowess. In fact, her shooting has gotten worse compared to last season. It’s possible that the added pressure of coming into a second season and having higher expectations is affecting Reese.

Reese came into the WNBA with flaws. Every player does, but given that she was the 7th overall pick, perhaps it was shortsighted to expect her to be a true superstar. She was never on the level of Clark and that’s been proven true so far. There’s still plenty of time for her to change the narrative, but the narrative itself has been what has hurt her the most. As the saying goes: comparison is the thief of joy.
