The Chicago Sky’s 2025 WNBA season has been anything but smooth. Under first-year head coach Tyler Marsh, the team has struggled to find consistency, entering their matchup against the Connecticut Sun with a disheartening 9-30 record.
With playoff hopes dashed early once again, frustrations are mounting both on and off the court. Angel Reese, the Sky’s second-year forward, has emerged as one of the most outspoken voices amid the team’s struggles.
In a recent interview with Julia Poe of the Chicago Tribune, Reese didn’t hold back in voicing her dissatisfaction with the current roster and team performance.
“I’m not settling for the same [expletive] we did this year,” Reese stated firmly. “We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me. I’m willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, that’s what I’m going to do this offseason.”
Reese’s criticism wasn’t limited to the overall team’s performance. She singled out veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot, who is nearing 37 and returning from an ACL injury, suggesting that Vandersloot may not be the player around whom the Sky should build a championship-caliber squad.
She also mentioned backup guards Rachel Banham and Hailey Van Lith as insufficient options to solidify the roster.
Locker room fallout and team dynamics
While Reese’s frankness has earned attention, it has also stirred tension within the Sky’s locker room. According to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports, multiple league insiders revealed that Reese’s direct comments have not been well received by her teammates.
The team has planned a meeting to confront and discuss Reese’s remarks, signaling a serious internal conversation about the path forward and Reese’s role within the group.
Despite the brewing discord, Reese remains committed to the Sky, provided meaningful changes are made to the roster.
“I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me,” Reese shared. “But while I am here, I’m going to try to stay open-minded about what I have here and maximize that as much as I can.”
Coach Tyler Marsh addressed the situation ahead of the game against the Sun, emphasizing discretion. “We are aware of it,” Marsh said. “We are addressing it in-house, currently speaking, so that’s where it’ll stay right now.”
