Chicago SkyAll-StarAngel Reese didn’t hold back after the recent WNBA collective bargaining agreement talks collapsed. At just 23, she openly criticized the league’s negotiating stance, calling the proposals “disrespectful” and expressing deep frustration with the pace of progress.

Reese revealed that the way players were treted during the discussions, and the proposals handed back, opened her eyes to the need for stronger athlete representation, likely prompting her to take a more active role in union leadership in the near future.

Reese plans to join negotiating table

When asked if she’d consider stepping up in the WNBPA, Reese didn’t hesitate. “It might be next year”, she confirmed, underlining her ambition to help shape the next CBA. She stressed the importance of her platform, noting, “If I sit back it looks like I don’t care…I know my voice and I know my platform”. She hopes her growing influence will benfit future WNBA players and contribute to securing better deals.

What Angel Reese’s role means for the WNBA’s future

Reese’s emergence as a union advocate signals a new wave of leadership in the WNBA. Her outspoken stance draws parallels to peers like Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, who also voiced support for strong negotiation startegies, Collier urging “we have to stand firm”, and Stewart lamenting the meeting was “a wasted opportunity”. As viewership, game attendance, and sponsorship deal values continue to rise, Reese’s push for equitable pay and benefits could prove pivotal.

Her leadership ambitions follow her rising on-court performance and popularity. Inher rookie season reese vecame an All-Star and a cultural phenomenon. Now in her sophomore year, she’s embraced as a “unique and relentless” leader by teammates, and appears primed to carry her influence off the court as well. Reese’s transition from All-Star athlete to activist marks a significant moment in the WNBA’s evolution. With her leadership, the WNBPA mayt gain fresh momentum in securing a fairer deal, one that reflects the league’s growing stature.
