The Chicago Sky pulled off two big wins over the Dallas Wings, scoring 97 and 94 points in back-to-back contests. But rather than basking in a moment of triumph, the franchise and Angel Reese has found itself at the center of controversy.
The drama stems not from what happened between the baselines, but from what occurred around them, particularly involving the officiating crew led by Roy Gulbeyan and a bizarre postgame scene involving Wings guard DiJonai Carrington.
Following Thursday’s matchup, Carrington was reportedly confronted by security after questioning officials postgame. And on Sunday, no-calls and inconsistent whistles again drew outrage from players, media, and fans.
Still, amidst the growing tension, Reese stayed laser-focused and found a moment to celebrate not just the victory, but a reunion that meant more than basketball.
An old bond renewed as Angel Reese fuels another Sky win
Sunday’s 94-88 win saw Reese bounce back from a quieter outing, finishing with 14 points and 9 rebounds. But before the game even tipped off, she had already experienced a personal highlight. On X the rookie forward posted a clip of her embracing Wings assistant coach Nola Henry.
“thanks for my pregame taco,” Reese captioned the video, adding heartwarming emojis that suggested something far deeper than just a snack exchange.
For those who’ve followed Reese beyond her WNBA rise, the gesture was symbolic of the relationship these two women built during the Unrivaled league’s inaugural season.
Henry, who was the head coach of Rose BC in Unrivaled, helped guide Reese to one of the most dominant campaigns in that league’s short history.
Under Henry, Reese put up the league’s first 20-point, 20-rebound game, took home Defensive Player of the Year honors, made the All-Unrivaled Second Team, and led Rose BC to a championship. The bond was real – and it’s one Reese hasn’t forgotten.
“It’s been such a pleasure to coach her. She comes in with the same mindset, the same mentality every day,” Henry said during the Unrivaled season.
“You know what you’re gonna get from her. You’re gonna get a competitor, you’re gonna get somebody that’s fun, that’s gonna lighten the group up through competing.”
