Angel Reese refused to add context around her comment: “fans are not watching WNBA just for Caitlin Clark”

The WNBA season tips off today with an exciting slate of three games: the Minnesota Lynx, featuring top draft pick Paige Bueckers, against the Dallas Wings; the Atlanta Dream versus the Washington Mystics; and the Los Angeles Sparks facing the Golden State Valkyries. The anticipation for a new season of women’s basketball is palpable, with several compelling storylines already unfolding.

All eyes are also on Saturday’s matchup, where Angel Reese is set to make her debut against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. Reese notably declined to elaborate on a previous comment she made regarding fans primarily tuning into the WNBA to watch Caitlin Clark. This initial remark has added an extra layer of intrigue to their first professional encounter.

The reason behind Angel Reese’s reluctance to explain her earlier comment might be rather straightforward. Considering that both Reese and Clark were prominent figures in the 2024 WNBA draft class, perhaps her silence speaks to the obvious dynamic between two highly touted rookies navigating their entry into the league.

Alternatively, Angel Reese’s decision to not elaborate could stem from a desire to avoid further fueling media attention and potential criticism, especially after a week where some playful back-and-forth between her and Clark had already generated significant buzz. Sometimes, choosing not to engage directly can be a strategic move in managing public perception.

The engagement of rivalry

Personally, I find the pre-game teasing and trash talk between players to be a fantastic element of sports. It injects excitement into the lead-up to games, fosters engagement within the fanbase and the wider audience, and naturally creates compelling storylines that draw viewers in. This kind of competitive banter often adds an extra layer of intrigue to the actual competition.

This WNBA season has the potential to be its most highly anticipated year yet, largely fueled by the presence of these two dynamic second-year players, Clark and Reese. Their impact was already evident last season, contributing significantly to record ratings and attendance figures. Now, their respective teams, the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky, are set to clash for the first of five matchups this season on Saturday, a game many fans have circled on their calendars.
