Angel Reese received a curious apology from a Heat fan during Tuesday’s Orlando Magic game

Angel Reese was handed an unexpected olive branch – in the form of an apology from a Miami Heat fan – during Tuesday’s NBA game between the Orlando Magic and the Heat.

The incident has been drawing attention for showing an unusual moment of respect toward the WNBA star, known more commonly for her on-court intensity than receiving goodwill from opposing crowds.

Reese, who was attending the game likely to support her rumored partner, Magic forward Wendell Carter Jr., was seated near the fan in question.

Following the game, she shared a video showing that fan – wearing a Heat jersey – approaching her group and apologizing, stating: “I apologize, I was being an opp.”

The slang “opp” stands for “opponent,” indicating that earlier banter or jeering may have been directed toward Reese, but the fan recognized it crossed a line and chose to set things right.

Why the apology stood out

Given Reese’s history – including recent controversies surrounding alleged fan misconduct during WNBA games and resulting investigations – the apology stands out as a rare public acknowledgment of accountability from a fan.

Earlier this year, the WNBA conducted an investigation into allegations of racist fan behavior directed at Reese during a game against the Indiana Fever. The league concluded it could not substantiate the claims.

Despite the lack of evidence, Reese‘s experience sparked widespread discussion about fan conduct, race, and respect in sports arenas. Leaders across the league reiterated their commitment to fostering safe, inclusive environments.

In this context, a fan stepping forward publicly to say sorry – even in a different sport – carries symbolic weight.

It suggests that at least some fans recognize when the boundaries of competition and respect have been crossed. The moment may be small, but for Reese and the broader conversation around respect in sports, it could make a difference.
