Angel Reese puts internet on blast after fake Brittney Griner quote goes viral

Angel Reese is used to the spotlight-but sometimes, the attention veers into the bizarre.

Ahead of the Chicago Sky’s upcoming matchup with the Indiana Fever, a fake quote began circulating online. According to the post, Reese supposedly said that “Prime Brittney Griner would beat Prime Allen Iverson”-a bold, out-of-nowhere claim that quickly lit up social media.

Reese wasted no time responding. “When did I say this??” she wrote Friday on X. “Y’all really make up something new every day lmaooo.” A few minutes later, she followed it up with a sharper jab: “I really hope that check be worth the amount of lies y’all make up EVERYDAY. I REALLYYYYY hope.”

The post, which had already gone viral, was quickly flagged as fake by fans and media outlets. Still, the moment stirred up another round of online debate-and frustration from Reese, who’s dealt with more than her fair share of media distortion since joining the WNBA in 2024.

Misinformation Isn’t New for Reese-But This Time, She’s Pushing Back Hard

This isn’t the first time false quotes or misrepresented stories have followed Reese. As one of the most talked-about players in the league-second perhaps only to Caitlin Clark-Reese has become both a fan favorite and a lightning rod for controversy.

The timing didn’t help either. The Sky are looking to shake off a rough 0-4 start to the season and build momentum after two straight wins over Dallas. Reese, while still rebounding at an elite level (12.3 RPG), has seen her scoring dip slightly this season to 10.0 points per game.

As for Saturday night’s rematch against the Fever? Indiana will be without Clark, who’s nursing a left quad strain-giving Chicago a prime shot at redemption. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET at the United Center.
