Angel Reese on Chicago Sky’s resounding loss to Phoenix Mercury: It’s my fault

The Chicago Sky were on the verge of finally claiming their first victory of the WNBA season Tuesday night. With a six-point lead early in the fourth quarter, it looked like the breakthrough they needed was within reach. But instead of closing out the game strong, the Sky were overwhelmed by a scorching Phoenix Mercury run that turned the tide in the final frame.

Phoenix outscored Chicago 25-11 in the final minutes to secure a 94-89 win, dropping the Sky to 0-4 on the season and leaving rookie Angel Reese visibly frustrated despite another record-breaking performance.

Reese, who continues to make waves in her WNBA debut season, didn’t shy away from accountability in her postgame remarks. While she finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds-securing yet another double-double-she focused on what went wrong defensively for the Sky.

“It’s tough,” Reese said. “We’ve got to run them off the line. That’s top to bottom, guards and post [players]. Post, we need to do a better job putting ball pressure on that. [Alyssa Thomas] had what, 15 assists? That’s on me.”

Alyssa Thomas shines as Sky falter late

While the Sky kept the game competitive and even controlled much of it through three quarters, they had no answer for Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who delivered a masterclass in court vision and ball distribution. Thomas racked up 15 assists along with 10 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.

Reese acknowledged her own struggles guarding Thomas, particularly in transition and when Thomas acted as the offensive initiator.

“I feel like I stopped her scoring-wise, but I don’t think I did a good job stopping her coming downhill, full head of steam and just being able to guard her kick outs,” Reese said.

Thomas repeatedly drew defenders and made the right pass to open shooters, which helped fuel Phoenix’s decisive late-game run.

Chicago’s defensive breakdowns, particularly around the arc, allowed the Mercury to find rhythm from deep and seize momentum just when it mattered most. Despite a strong effort from Sky starters and another impactful performance from Reese, their inability to close out games remains a glaring concern.
