WNBA confirms new Collective Bargaining Agreement
Meanwhile, in critical news, the WNBA Board of Governors unanimously approved a new seven-year collective bargaining agreement, running from 2026 through 2032, reflecting a landmark deal that dramatically increases player salaries, strengthens benefits, and expands professional opportunities.
Players also unanimously ratified the agreement over the weekend, with more than 90% participating in the vote, and the deal introduces a $7 million salary cap per team in 2026, projected to exceed $10 million by the end of the CBA, marking unprecedented growth in league finances.
Average player salaries will rise to about $600,000 in 2026, with minimum salaries above $300,000 and supermax contracts beginning at $1.4 million, while revenue-sharing provisions allocate roughly 20% of gross league revenue to player compensation, benefiting athletes league-wide.
“This marks the beginning of a bold new era of the WNBA, one made possible by the passion and dedication of the players, team owners, fans, investors, partners and the entire WNBA family,” Cathy Engelbert said.
The CBA also enhances bonuses for championships and MVP awards, improves benefits and protections, and lays the groundwork for league expansion, including upcoming drafts, free agency, and preparation for the season’s May 8 tip-off, ensuring growth and sustainability.
Lawyers are finalizing the long-form agreement, setting the stage for the league to host an expansion draft for Toronto and Portland, followed by free agency and the April 13 college draft in New York, all aimed at preparing teams and players for a milestone season.
