It was supposed to be a quiet night for the Phillies – up big, cruising past the White Sox, just another summer game. But in the middle of the 6-0 blowout, WNBA star Angel Reese somehow ended up in the crossfire.
While calling the game Tuesday night, Phillies announcer Tom McCarthy used the downtime to wish his old high school basketball buddy, Bob Wyskowski, a happy birthday. He threw in a light joke about how Wyskowski used to clean up his missed shots on the court.
That’s when former Phillies sluggerand color analyst John Kruk jumped in – and things got weird.“There’s someone here in Chicago that does that a lot,” Kruk said, clearly referencing Reese. “She gets her points,” McCarthy replied. “She gets her rebounds, too,” Kruk added with a grin.
The exchange was quick, but not subtle – especially not to fans of Reese, who’ve heard the criticisms before.
Reese Fires Back After Mid-Game Broadcast Diss
The Chicago Sky forward, known for her dominance on the glass and unapologetic style, caught wind of the jab even as she was busy racking up another monster stat line: 22 points and 13 rebounds in a loss to the Mystics.
Reese didn’t name names, but she didn’t have to. “Clout is one helluva DRUG. like it really gets to a point,” she posted on X shortly after the clip started circulating. Later, she took to TikTok to mouth a biting message: “To anybody that’s been mean to me, and you’re having a hard time in life – good.“
The criticism Kruk echoed centers around Reese’s “Mebounds”– a term she proudly uses to describe rebounding her own missed shots. Detractors say it’s stat-padding. Her fans say it’s hustle. Reese says… keep watching.
Still Making History – Whether You Like It or Not
Despite the noise, Reese has been rewriting the WNBA record books. She now owns the rookie record for most consecutive double-doubles (13 and counting), and earlier this season became the fastest player to reach both 500 points and 500 rebounds – a feat that took just 26 games.
As WNBA analyst LaChina Robinson tweeted, “What Angel Reese is doing as a rookie is historic. Let’s talk about that more than her misses.”
So, sure – maybe she misses sometimes. But Reese also never stops coming. And if John Kruk wasn’t a believer before, he might be soon enough.
