The WNBA has seen its fair share of viral moments this season, but nothing quite like the saga of the flying lime green sex toys.
On Friday night in Chicago, during the Valkyries’ 73-66 win over the Sky, play briefly paused when an apparent dildo hit the court-again. It’s the second such incident in a week, both involving Valkyries road games, and it’s quickly become a bizarre subplot for the league.
Angel Reese, who sat out the game due to a back injury, didn’t waste time jumping into the conversation. In a tweet aimed at Indiana Fever’s Sydney Colson, she joked: “hey @SydJColson, why do you keep throwing your mean green in different arenas…. it’s getting weird.”
Colson, who had already turned the first incident into a joke on X, replied with a smirking selfie-keeping the humor going. But not everyone’s in on the joke.
Players Speak Out: “It’s Dangerous, Not Funny”
While Reese and Colson traded barbs, other players were far less amused. “It’s super disrespectful,” said Sky center Elizabeth Williams via the Associated Press. “Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.”
Fever forward Sophie Cunningham echoed that frustration in a blunt post on X: “Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us.”
New York Liberty’s Isabelle Harrison went further, calling out arena security for allowing the disruption to happen twice in a week: “ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??! Please do better. It’s not funny. Never was funny.”
The first incident occurred Tuesday during a close Valkyries win over the Atlanta Dream. That time, play was halted so police and arena staff could remove the object. Friday’s version? The ref just kicked it out of the way.
The Valkyries are back on the court Sunday against Las Vegas. With fans now half-expecting a third appearance from the “mean green,” security teams will likely be on high alert.
Because while Reese and Colson can laugh online, the line between viral moment and safety hazard is wearing thin.
