The Chicago Sky entered the 2025 WNBA season with high expectations but have endured a rough start. And now Angel Reese finds herself on the wrong side of the media once again as a frustrated Sky player blows up postgame.
Buoyed by the return of franchise legend Courtney Vandersloot and the addition of a top rookie talent in the form of Hailey Van Lith, there was hope the Wintrust Arena would kick on this year.
However, just two games into the season, that dream has begun to unravel as the team suffered their second consecutive blowout, falling 99-74 to the New York Liberty on Thursday to leave them 0-2 for the season.
Led by Natasha Cloud and Sabrina Ionescu, the Liberty torched Chicago’s defense with a record-breaking 19 three-pointers, and the Sky now hold a league-worst -60 point differential to start the season.
Reese, bow into her second year, particularly struggled he went 0-for-8 from the field, missed four of her six free throws, and registered just one assist-the first time in her professional career that she failed to make a single field goal.
She added 12 points on rebounds, but it was far from enough to keep her team in the contest on a lacklustre night in the Windy City before their deflated home crowd.
Sky legend rips into Chicago team
Her lack of offensive production became a symbol of the Sky‘s broader issues and as a result, their veteran leader and legendary player, Vandersloot, although she wasn’t solely or directly calling out Reese,
Ultimately, she did not mince her words postgame and made it no secret that she was annoyed she watched the team commit 23 turnovers, many unforced, which allowed the Liberty to score 27 fast-break points.
“A lot of them are just dumb plays,” Vandersloot said to reporters. “Offensively, we haven’t found a groove yet-[we’re] a little out of rhythm. It will come with time.
“We have to work on our chemistry offensively. We are trying to figure out spacing. We haven’t figured out how we can position our post players so it benefits us.”
Spacing, or the lack thereof, has been a glaring weakness. Reese and Kamilla Cardoso have not been able to co-exist effectively in the paint, often clogging each other’s lanes in their quest to get on the ball and involved in action.
These mistakes suggest a team not only lacking chemistry but also structure. Chicago’s offensive schemes appear stagnant, with no defined go-to scorer and minimal off-ball movement.
The Sky will finally look to get back to winning ways on May 25 against the Los Angeles Sparks as they head to the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday to face a team similarly struggling, with a 1-2 record.
