Angel Reese and the trade rumors in the WNBA: Washington Mystics and Los Angeles Sparks lead the odds

Trade rumors in the WNBA continue to make noise, and the name dominating the headlines is Angel Reese, one of the league’s most dominant players over the past two years. Following her suspension with the Chicago Sky, two teams have been identified as the main candidates to acquire her services: the Washington Mystics and the Los Angeles Sparks.

The 23-year-old forward, selected in the first round of the 2024 Draft out of LSU, was sanctioned for critical comments toward her teammates and the organization. Reese publicly stated that the Sky needs to strengthen its roster with top-tier players if it wants to compete for the championship, even mentioning key positions like point guard and outside shooting.

Despite apologizing to her team, the Sky decided to suspend her in mid-September, sending a clear message about internal discipline. However, this situation has fueled speculation about a possible trade, as Reese remains the offensive and defensive engine of Chicago, averaging 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, with two consecutive WNBA All-Star appearances.

Washington Mystics and Los Angeles Sparks, the trade favorites

According to reports and analyst commentary, Washington and Los Angeles are the only franchises with enough resources to attempt a trade for Reese. In the case of the Mystics, the trade package would include young prospects like Sonia Citron or Kiki Rice, along with first-round picks. Meanwhile, the Sparks could offer Cameron Brink or Rickea Jackson, plus two draft picks.

Although Washington would be unlikely to part with Citron, the idea of pairing her with Reese is appealing to fans. The truth is that both organizations have the young talent and draft capital that Chicago would seek in a move of this magnitude.

The debate over Chicago Sky’s management

Beyond the trade rumors, Reese’s situation has also reignited the debate over the management of the Chicago Sky. An anonymous league executive, quoted by Dallas Hoops Journal, stated that the franchise is “probably the worst managed in the WNBA” and called the suspension of its best player “shameful.”

Even so, Reese herself has expressed that her desire is to stay in Chicago, as long as the organization strengthens the roster and commits to competing at the highest level. The outcome of this chapter will not only shape the future of the young star but also the immediate direction of the franchise.

“I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t work out, I obviously might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me,”Reese said.
