Angel Reese and the ‘mebounds’ phenomenon: The rebounding queen driving the future of the Chicago Sky in the WNBA

In basketball, rebounding is often the silent job that few applaud-unless something goes wrong. However, Angel Reese has changed that perception. The Chicago Sky star turned criticism into a golden opportunity with her now-famous phrase “mebounds,” a declaration of ownership over every ball that comes off the backboard.

After weeks of being trolled on social media, Reese trademarked the phrase and launched a product line, including the mebounds colorway for her upcoming Angel Reese 1 sneakers. In just a few months, the project became a six-figure business, proving that this new generation of WNBA players knows how to turn pressure into both commercial and athletic momentum.

The value of star Angel Reese

Beyond marketing, basketball experts understand the true impact of rebounding. Journalist Erica Ayala, on the podcast We Need To Talk, emphasized that Reese’s absence has been a major blow for the Sky: “Rebounding is a huge part of the game. Teams that don’t rebound consistently don’t win in the WNBA.”

Before her back injury, Reese was averaging 14.2 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, making her the main reason Chicago ranks as the second-best rebounding team in the league. Nevertheless, despite her strong season, the Sky is virtually out of playoff contention.

Chicago Sky and young talent

With 12 games remaining, the focus should be on developing their young talent. Alongside Reese, the team features promising players like Hailey Van Lith and Kamila Cardoso, as well as rookies like Maddy Westbeld, who are still finding their roles within the system.

This final stretch could be used to give them more minutes and experience, ensuring they’re better prepared to compete at the highest level next year.

The anticipated return of Angel Reese

Reese’s injury has kept her out for six consecutive games, frustrating fans who were hoping to see her break her personal double-double record. According to coach Tyler Marsh, her recovery is progressing: “She’s doing more on the court every day, but she hasn’t practiced with the team yet.”

Team practice is usually the final step before a return, so her comeback might not be imminent. And while hope remains, the question arises: is it worth risking her this year?

With limited playoff chances, rushing her return may be unnecessary. The example of rival Caitlin Clark, affected by an accelerated recovery, serves as a reminder that patience might be the smartest move. Shutting down Angel Reese for the season could ensure the Sky comes back stronger next campaign.
