Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky hit crisis point after loss to Sparks

The Chicago Sky entered the 2025 WNBA season with renewed hope and plenty of attention, largely due to the presence of rookie sensation Angel Reese.

But despite Reese‘s standout individual performances, the franchise remains mired in a slump that’s raising serious concerns.

Sunday’s 91-78 defeat to the Los Angeles Sparks dropped Chicago to 0-3 on the season, extending their winless streak to a staggering eight games dating back to last September.

The last time the Sky tasted victory was September 8, 2024, against the Dallas Wings-a stretch that now spans 259 days.

Reese continues to deliver, but team struggles persist

Reese, the No. 7 pick in the 2024 draft, has lived up to her billing early in the season, recording two double-doubles in her first three games.

Her 13-point, 12-rebound, 4-assist performance against the Sparks was another highlight in what is shaping up to be an impressive rookie campaign. The outing marked the 28th double-double of her professional career, a remarkable stat considering her youth.

However, her production hasn’t been enough to turn the tide for a franchise still finding its footing after an offseason of change. The Sky added veterans Courtney Vandersloot and Kia Nurse in hopes of stabilizing the roster, but the chemistry has yet to translate into results on the court.

Chicago’s woes are part of a broader trend among a few struggling teams. The Dallas Wings, who have lost 13 straight games since August 30, 2024, are the only franchise currently enduring a longer slide.

Meanwhile, the Connecticut Sun have also opened 2025 winless at 0-4.

There are signs of promise in Chicago-Reese‘s development, flashes from newcomers, and the potential for improved cohesion as the season progresses-but moral victories are beginning to wear thin. The pressure to find a win is growing.

The Sky will next travel to face the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night in what’s quickly becoming a must-win scenario. Tip-off is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. EDT, and the game presents an opportunity for the Sky to reset and finally break their long-running drought.

Until then, questions remain. Can Angel Reese continue to anchor this team as she develops into one of the league’s brightest young stars?

And can the Sky translate their individual talent into collective success before the season slips away?
