Angel Reese admits fear of media and says she’d rather pay fines than be misrepresented

Angel Reese, one of the WNBA’s rising stars, recently spoke candidly about her fear of media scrutiny and the fallout from an interview that led to her suspension from the Chicago Sky.

Earlier in September, Reese was benched by the Sky for comments the team labeled “detrimental.”

The controversy stemmed from a conversation with the Chicago Tribune, where she openly questioned if the team had the right pieces to compete for a championship. After headlines sparked backlash, Reese clarified her position, explaining that her words had been “taken out of context.”

The 22-year-old forward used her own platform, Unapologetically Angel, to address her growing discomfort with the media.

“Even before the game, I’m terrified of what the media is about to ask. It could be the nicest question, but it’s going to get flipped or put into a different light and perspective. …. I don’t wanna do an interview with anybody. … I’d rather take the fine sometimes rather than talking to the media.”

Reese wants a winning team and isn’t afraid to speak out

In a separate interview with Julia Poe, Reese was direct about her expectations moving forward.

She stated she wasn’t “settling for the same s**t” next season and called on the Sky to pursue elite talent. If not, she said she’d consider playing elsewhere to chase a championship.

She also expressed concern about whether veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot, despite her experience, could still lead a title-contending team given her age and past injuries.

While Sky coach Tyler Marsh confirmed the situation had been resolved internally, Reese‘s comments have sparked both support and criticism online. Some fans praised her honesty, while others took issue with her approach.

Still, Reese remains unshaken. With a growing fanbase and a clear voice, she’s determined to do things on her own terms-even if it means paying the price to protect her narrative.
