Andy Reid throws subtle shade at Patrick Mahomes saying Chiefs should follow Travis Kelce’s example

If there’s anyone convinced that Travis Kelce is coming back stronger after the heartbreak of Super Bowl LIX, it’s Andy Reid. The Chiefs’ head coach hasn’t held back in praising his star tight end during training camp, hyping up Kelce’s focus and physical transformation during the offseason. After a season that sparked retirement rumors and brought a whirlwind of off-field attention, Kelce seems more locked in than ever.

Is Andy Reid really just praising Kelce – or hinting at Mahomes?

But Reid’s praise wasn’t just about the now-leaner, laser-focused Kelce. His comments might have carried some extra weight, and fans were quick to catch it.

According to Reid, Kelce showed up in peak shape, dropping 25 pounds and proving that even after 12 brutal NFL seasons, discipline isn’t optional. The coach went as far as to say that if Kelce, at his age, can come into camp with that level of commitment, anyone on the roster should be able to do the same. Now, Reid may have wrapped it in humor, joking Kelce was “80 years old,” but make no mistake-this wasn’t just a compliment. Some fans felt it like a clear nudge at Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes, known for a more relaxed offseason vibe, often returns to camp with a bit of what fans have dubbed the “dad bod.” While it’s never stopped him from dominating the field, Reid’s comments hint at a desire to see his franchise quarterback leading the way-not just on Sundays, but every day in camp.

Kelce’s setting the tone – and maybe raising expectations

Despite nearing 36, Kelce is once again showing up as the guy for Kansas City. With his offseason distractions now in the rearview-whether romantic adventures or retirement rumors-he’s back with a chip on his shoulder and a new level of intensity. Reid noted that Kelce’s leadership, conditioning, and overall energy are raising the bar for the entire team, especially for the younger players who look up to him.

Meanwhile, the subtle message seems clear: it’s not just about natural talent anymore. If veterans like Kelce can show this kind of drive, there’s no excuse for anyone else-even Mahomes. Whether intentional or not, Andy Reid’s comments have sparked plenty of conversation heading into the season. Mahomes has never lacked effort or heart, but perhaps this is the coach’s way of reminding his MVP to lead not just with highlight throws, but with discipline too.
