Andy Reid takes pressure off Travis Kelce for his mistakes and takes full responsibility for the Chiefs’ loss

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid took full responsibility for his team’s 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and relieved Travis Kelce of any blame, despite the tight end’s mistake that cost his side a potential victory.

Kelce, 35, had a game to forget – registering only four receptions and 62 yards – as the veteran TE experienced another miserable evening against the Eagles, just as he did in Super Bowl LIX.

He made a rare error which may well have cost the Chiefs the game, giving them a 0-2 record. He dropped a crucial touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes that led to an interception, and the play shifted the momentum back in the Eagles’ favor.

But Reid fronted up in the post-game press conference, stating, “I’ll take full responsibility for that game.”

Despite Kelce’s uncharacteristic mistake, Reid chose to shield his star player from criticism. Instead, he focused on his own role in the defeat, emphasizing that the loss was a collective team effort and that he bore the ultimate responsibility as their coach.

A deep dive into the Chiefs’ defeat

The Chiefs’ offense struggled throughout the game, managing only 17 points against a formidable Eagles defense. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for over 300 yards but was unable to find the end zone.

It represented the first time in the three-time Super Bowl winner’s career that he has started a season with a 0-2 record, a feat that goes all the way back to high school days, according to some reports.

The Eagles’ defense, led by defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, effectively neutralized Kansas City’s high-powered offense, forcing them into multiple third-and-long situations.

Kelce’s dropped touchdown was a pivotal moment. Had he secured the catch, it would have given the Chiefs a significant lead and possibly changed the game’s outcome.

However, the drop led to an Eagles interception, and the Chiefs were unable to recover. It just goes to show even the best players are capable of simple errors.

Reid’s leadership in the aftermath

Reid’s decision to take full responsibility for the loss reflects his leadership style and commitment to his players. By protecting Kelce from blame, Reid demonstrated his willingness to take them out of the firing line so they can concentrate on returning to winning ways.

His approach fosters a supportive environment where players are encouraged to take risks and learn from their errors without fear of retribution.

The Chiefs will need to address their offensive inconsistencies and capitalize on scoring opportunities. With the season still young, Reid’s leadership will be crucial in guiding the team through this challenging period and preparing them for upcoming games.
