Andy Reid shakes up the order to boost Kansas City’s offense after letting down Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs are heading into the 2025 season with a bold plan to restore their explosive offensive identity. In the aftermath of Super Bowl LIX, head coach Andy Reid has signaled a strategic overhaul to better support Patrick Mahomes and rejuvenate the team’s aerial attack.

Last season, the Chiefs endured uncharacteristic pass protection woes. Mahomes was sacked more than ever in his career, suffering under an offensive line that frequently failed to hold up.

As SI noted, “Reid did not have an answer for the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense” in the Super Bowl, and the combination of poor protection and lack of receiver availability prevented the offense from hitting its rhythm.

One of the main reasons play-calling stayed conservative was to mitigate those line issues. Without solid protection, Reid found it difficult to dial up deep shots and let Mahomes fully unleash.

Additionally, injuries among wideouts meant the chemistry downfield never really developed. Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy was one exception, stepping up amid the chaos and earning praise for his performance.

A tactical reset at midfield

For 2025, the Chiefs hope a reinforced line empowers Reid to open the offense again. They’ve addressed the trenches by signing veteran free agents and drafting promising talent, with pundits like Mike Tannenbaum projecting those upgrades could greatly bolster Mahomes’ protection.

A restored front allows Reid to reintroduce his signature vertical offense-deep shots and creative sequencing. Commentators pointed out how the team ranked last in air yards per completion-“a football tragedy” considering their potential. But now, with better blocking, Reid’s exuberant play sheet – long calls for downfield attacks – can make a comeback.

It’s also likely Reid will have more freedom with the run game. Last season’s rushing attack, hampered by injuries and inadequate line play, led to skewed planning. Reid and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy were forced to run fewer designed rushes, remaining largely one-dimensional. With healthier personnel, they can restore balance and alleviate pressure on Mahomes.

One wildcard, Xavier Worthy, is expected to be a crucial beneficiary. After exploding onto the scene with 59 receptions, 638 yards, and six touchdowns as a rookie – including a sparkling performance late in Super Bowl LIX – his development could unlock the deep game.

His speed and route versatility give Reid the kind of burner who can stretch defenses and open space underneath. As SI noted, “Worthy was the player who emerged when those setbacks occurred.”

If injuries stay at bay, Worthy should complement a rising Rashee Rice and rejuvenated Marquise Brown, giving the Chiefs both consistency and threat from every level.

In summary, Kansas City’s offseason pivots indicate a strategic evolution rooted in fixing what failed in 2024. Repairing pass protection unlocks the deep playbook, reviving Andy Reid’s aggressive spirit. Pair that with a healthier running attack and a breakout second year for Worthy, and the Chiefs appear poised to return to their explosive ways.

The upcoming season will ultimately test if Reid’s retooled approach can secure Kansas City’s fourth Super Bowl appearance in five years – and perhaps even a threepeat.
