The Kansas City Chiefs have won their first game of the year but much of the postgame conversation centered on emotional sideline exchange between Andy Reid and Travis Kelce, as things got heated on September 21.
The AFC West team took their first victory of the season on Sunday night, overcoming early struggles to defeat the New York Giants 22-9, but fans have been chatting about how the tight end and his head coach threatened to come to blows.
Kansas City entered the matchup under pressure after opening the season with an 0-2 record and at the MetLife, they once again looked disjointed and unsettled offensively in the first half as drives sputtered, and momentum was difficult to maintain.
That tension boiled over late in the second quarter, when Kelce was seen engaging in a heated confrontation with Reid on the sideline as cameras captured the two colliding physically while trading words for good measure.
After the game, Reid downplayed the incident and reframed it as an example of leadership and competitive drive rather than the risk of the 66-year-old losing control of the locker room.
“I love Travis’ passion, man,” Reid said. “We need more of that.
“He knows when to back off the pedal and when to push it, too. Sometimes I have to be the policeman.”
It’s understandable why the 35-year-old athlete was annoyed as Kelce’s numbers against the Giants were modest with just four receptions for 26 yards on seven targets from Patrick Mahomes.
Although his presence remained central to Kansas City’s offensive rhythm, particularly as defenses continue to key in on limiting his connection with his quarterback, he is struggling to get involved in tangible action.
Through three games this season, Kelce has posted one touchdown and 134 yards on 30 receptions. They’re numbers that are down on his historic heights as he enters the twilight phase of his career.
Mahomes shouldered much of the workload in the win, completing 22 of 37 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown as his ability to improvise and buy time proved key once again.
The stat line reflected the Chiefs’ ongoing search for offensive fluidity, as the unit has not yet displayed the efficiency that once defined its dominance from 2019-2022.
Chris Jones also played a pivotal role too, as the Pro Bowl defensive linesman was vital in helping Kansas City control the line of scrimmage against a Giants team struggling to generate points.
But perhaps beyond the players, Reid’s ability to absorb confrontation while reinforcing his player’s value suggests a deliberate approach to keeping his locker room united.
Who do the Chiefs play in Week 4? Date, time where to watch next Kansas City game
The Chiefs’ next game is against the Baltimore Ravens at the Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, September 28 as Mahomes welcomes Lamar Jackson to his home turf.
Kickoff for the Week 4 contest is due at 16:25 ET / 13:25 PT and the match will be live on CBS Sports, with streaming options available via Paramount+ and NFL+ for extra measure too.
