Authorities determined that Garrett had died from an accidental overdose after a long battle with addiction. The news devastated Reid and his family, shaking the foundation of his world even as he continued coaching that season.
NFL analyst Louis Riddick, who was with the Eagles at the time, recalled the heartbreak in The Kingdom. “I had just seen Garrett the day before,” Riddick said.
“He was trying to get his life in order and was living across the hall from his dad. Those demons got him. Simple as that.”
The Reid family later released a statement following the autopsy, acknowledging both Garrett’s struggles and his bravery. “He will always have our family’s love,” the statement read. “We take comfort in our faith and know he’s in a better place.”

Even as Reid moved forward with his career, eventually leaving Philadelphia for Kansas City, Garrett’s absence has never left him.

The emotional strain surfaced again this offseason when reports noted Reid was “heartbroken” after safety Deon Bush suffered a serious injury. It was another reminder that beneath the image of the stoic coach and master play-caller, Reid remains deeply human.
