Lucas Akins, a footballer in EFL League One in England, has been sentenced at Leeds Crown Court for causing the death of a cyclist in Huddersfield. The accident took place in March 2022. Akins crashed his vehicle and ran over cyclist Adrian Daniel, 33, who died 10 days later in hospital. The sentence stipulated a 14-month prison sentence for the footballer. He will serve the first part of his sentence in preventive detention and the other part on probation. He was also banned from driving for a year.
“I am clear that it is very unlikely that he will cause trouble in the courts again. There is strong personal mitigation. However, it seems that the appropriate punishment can only be achieved with pre-trial detention,” explained Judge Alex Menary to the 36-year-old footballer.
This season, Akins has been playing for Mansfield Town in League One. After the accident, he has continued to play, despite pleading guilty. The footballer has a record of more than 600 games in his career in England and Scotland, as well as seven senior international appearances for Grenada, the most recent starting in a defeat against Russia in March.
The accident
Carmel Pearson, KC County Prosecutor, told the court how the accident happened: “Adrian Daniel was cycling downhill on Huddersfield Road, heading towards the same junction. He had a front camera recording his ride, and the footage shows him in good shape. Crossland Factory Lane becomes a T-junction, and Huddersfield Road is a give way junction. The defendant in the recording, although driving slowly, went off at the give way junction and hit Adrian Daniel. It was too late for Adrian Daniel to brake and he suffered a serious head injury.”
