The Los Angeles Rams have made a major move this offseason by acquiring star wide receiver Davante Adams, adding another elite playmaker to their offense. With veteran Cooper Kupp expected to depart, Adams will now pair up with standout receiver Puka Nacua to form one of the league’s most formidable receiving duos. The unexpected dilemma that has now emerged is who will wear the No. 17 jersey.
Throughout his career, Adams has worn No. 17, a number that has become synonymous with his dominance in the NFL.
Now that he has landed in Los Angeles, the question has arisen as to whether he will continue wearing the same number or if Nacua, who has worn No. 17 since his breakout rookie season, will be willing to give it up.
During a recent appearance on The St. Brown Podcast, hosted by Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, Nacua was asked about the possibility of relinquishing his number for Adams. St. Brown even raised the stakes, asking if he would do it for $2 million.
“Two mil? I don’t know,” Nacua responded hesitantly. “I don’t think I do (it) for two mil.”
His reluctance suggests that he has grown attached to the number, which became a part of his identity during his record-breaking rookie season. Whether Adams will push for the number or choose a new one remains to be seen, but Nacua doesn’t seem eager to part with it-even for a hefty payday.
How Nacua learned about the Rams’ big move
Beyond the jersey number discussion, Nacua also shared the moment he found out the Rams were signing Adams. As fate would have it, he was at a friend’s wedding with his phone off when head coach Sean McVay attempted to reach him multiple times.
Once Nacua finally checked his phone, he saw McVay‘s name on the screen and immediately picked up.
“My phone was buzzing, so I pull it out and it says ‘Sean McVay,'” Nacua recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh, yup. Let me answer this’-automatic, no hesitation. I just turned around and was like, ‘Yo, what’s up Coach?’
“He was like, ‘What are you doing?’ I’m like, ‘I’m at Kobie’s wedding right now.’ He’s like, ‘Oh, all right. Just wanted to call you and see what you thought if we get Davante Adams.’
“I was like, ‘Word! For real?’ And he was like, ‘We’re in some negotiations but I wanted to call you about it first.’ I was like, ‘Appreciate you coach.’ I was like, ‘Let’s do it, bro. Hell yeah. Let’s do it. Let’s ride.'”
