The New England Patriots have had a very active offseason. With their sights set on returning to the Super Bowl next season, they signed eleven players in free agency; however, according to some analysts, there are still some prospects on the market who could contribute significantly to the team.
At this point, it seems fair to say that the Patriots surprised everyone in the 2025 NFL season. From a 3-14 record in 2024, they went 14-3 last season and reached Super Bowl LX.
Although critics have pointed to the Patriots’ soft schedule, fans and analysts have also noted the team’s potential to become the next NFL dynasty.
To that end, the team set about strengthening its weak areas in free agency, but analysts like Mike D’Abate of Sports Illustrated pointed to five free agents who could have an impact on the team.
These 5 players could fit in New England
According to D’Abate, Mike Vrabel’s roster would benefit from the addition of any of these players, who are still available on the market:
- Keenan Allen (WR): The 13-year veteran can still contribute to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ game plan.
- David Njoku (TE): More than a blocker, Njoku is a receiver with the power to win contested catches in the low end zone.
- Cameron Jordan (DE): At 36 years old, Jordan still contributed 10.5 sacks, 46 tackles, and 15 tackles for loss in 2025 for the Saints.
- Taylor Rapp (S): Last season, Rapp only played six games due to injury, but when healthy, he’s a good short-term deal.
- Cam Robinson (OT): The Pats desperately need help at this position, and Robinson is one of the best left tackles still available on the market.
The salary cap and free agency
Patriots salary cap expert Miguel Benzan noted that the team has $33.3 million in cap space available through 2026, and it’s unlikely the front office will want to leave that money idle.
While some of the free agents mentioned by D’Abate are intriguing possibilities for the team, owner Robert Kraft and head coach Mike Vrabel are still reserving some of that cap space for their draft picks.
Only time will tell what path the team will take to maintain its dominance in the AFC East this season.
